Abstract

|
Ultrastructure of the tracheal epithelium of the Mongolian gerbil was examined by electron microscope.
The epithelium was found to be of a simple columnar type composed of ciliated cell, goblet cell, basal cell and a fourth type of cell, here called nonciliated cell. The basement membrane was separated from adjacent parts of the ciliated, goblet, and basal cells by a 200 A wide less non-opaque space. A great number of nonciliated cells were observed. These cells contained abundant smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, large Golgi complex, many short microvilli and many mitochondria. These features suggested a secretory function for the cells. The goblet cells were not as abundant as ciliated cells. The whole part of the cell were occupied by mucous granule and large opaque granules.
